About Monster Resume Writing...
Pricing Points, Fast Facts, BBB, Complaints

You know it as a job search engine; in fact, Monster.com is the largest job search engine in the world with over a million job postings at any given time. With over 63 million job seekers pouring over the site each month, it should come as no surprise that the company offers a resume writing service.

And for years they did it right; rather than trying to build a writing service from scratch, they partnered with CareerPerfect.com -- the online division of Career Services Group, Inc. These folks had been in resume writing and employment training since 1978. And almost incredibly, they had maintained an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.

But all that has changed: in January 2015, Career Services Group was acquired by Talent, Inc., a company that's been on a buying spree for resume writing outfits for a few years now. Read my concerns under the Cons, below.

What I Liked (the Pros)

They (Talent, Inc.) say they have 300 professional writers with experience spanning more than 65 industry specializations. In theory, they can pair you with a writer who can speak the language of your industry. That's good.

Resume samples demonstrate a good grasp of contemporary resume design and layout. Writing is solid.

Interview guarantee; if you're not receiving interviews after 60 days, they will rewrite your resume free of charge.
Rush option is available.

What I Didn't Like (the Cons)

Career Services Group, whose writers previously wrote excellent resumes on behalf of Monster, was acquired by Talent, Inc. in 2015. Talent claims to be "the largest producer of professional content and career correspondence in the world." What the company doesn't mention on their website is their Better Business Bureau rating. At the time of the acquisition, that rating was an "F."

Update: As of August 2017, Talent's BBB rating is B+. That's a dramatic improvement from F, but the volume of complaints on the BBB site have actually increased.

Given Talent's takeover of Monster's resume writing business and their whipsaw rating history with the BBB, my worry is that Monster's historically high standards have slackened. I'll be monitoring, and will have more on this going forward.

Talent is focused on a questionnaire to the exclusion of a telephone interview with the client. They claim a writer will "reach out to you" with any additional questions, but I would assume that would be an email communication. At these price points -- especially at the mid and executive level -- a phone conversation should be in the cards.

There is no indication that the writers are industry certified, as in Certified Professional Resume Writers. The company calls them "professional writers," but that's not the same as certified. I have a bias toward certification.

Review Summary and Recommendation

Pricing is reasonable, resume samples look OK, and the guarantee is inline with the competition. I would like to have seen the inclusion of a consultative telephone interview as part of their business model, but that's not in the cards.

Finally, while there had been zero complaints to the Better Business Bureau with Monster's previous contractor, that has now changed. Complaints and negative reviews are exploding since Talent, Inc. has taken over the job of writing the resumes for Monster.

For years I had no trouble recommending Monster. Now, I would urge prospective clients to consider alternatives. One need only click the BBB link provided in the sidebar (for Talent - dba TopResume) and read a few complaints to see what I mean. Time will tell whether they can pull their act together. While I can't recommend them at this point, for those who want to explore this company further...

Complaints:

Regarding Talent, Inc., the company that contracts to write Monster's resumes under the moniker TopResume, the BBB reports 67 complaints within the past 3 years, most having to do with problems with the product/service. The number of those complaints, the failure of the company to respond to many of them, and "advertising issues" all contributed to lowering the rating for the company.

Additional complaints -- and they are growing like weeds -- can be found on consumer complaint websites including:

-- ComplaintsBoard.com
-- PissedConsumer.com
-- TrustPilot.com

The few complaints that have been posted on Internet forums prior to 2013, most notably on ComplaintsBoard.com, are complaints about the previous contractor, CareerPerfect.com.
